The Crash Issue

A defective update to Dell’s SupportAssist Remediation service is causing widespread Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) loops on Dell and Alienware laptops. Affected systems crash every 30 minutes with the CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED error, rendering devices nearly unusable. The problematic version is SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0, a background service that operates separately from the main SupportAssist application. Users began reporting erratic reboots after updating BIOS, dock firmware, or support software through Dell Command Update or SupportAssist.

Because the Remediation service runs silently as a standalone Windows process, identifying it as the crash source requires careful event log analysis. Models affected include the XPS 15 9530 and others across Dell and Alienware product lines. Dell’s support forums first flagged the issue on May 12, 2026, and a Dell community manager confirmed that engineering teams are actively investigating.

Workaround and Resolution

Dell has provided an interim workaround: manually uninstall the problem service. Users should open Windows Settings, navigate to Apps > Installed Apps, search for Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 or Alienware SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0, and select Uninstall. After removal, any system repair points created by Dell OS Recovery may become unavailable, but keeping the main SupportAssist app or Dell Command Update installed will automatically download the corrected replacement version once Dell pushes the update.

For users still experiencing BSODs after uninstalling the service, Dell recommends contacting official support. Warranty users can reach Dell’s live chat support for expedited assistance. A permanent fix is in development and expected to be released soon.
