Microsoft has introduced a new preview build for Windows 11 Insiders that restores the ability to resize and reposition the taskbar, a feature many users have requested since the operating system launched. The update, available in the Experimental channel as Build 26300.8493, allows the taskbar to be moved to the top, left, or right side of the screen in addition to the default bottom placement. Users can also enable smaller taskbar buttons to reduce icon and bar height, freeing up vertical screen space without requiring a restart or sign out.

Expanded Start menu customization

Alongside taskbar changes, Microsoft is giving users greater control over the Start menu. A new toggle lets users disable recommended content and the All apps view, creating a menu that shows only pinned applications. Microsoft notes that a list of recently installed apps will remain visible, as it helps users discover new software. The company is also improving file relevance in the Start menu by prioritizing the most pertinent items and adding an option to hide the user name and profile picture from the menu.

Broader system improvements planned

Microsoft has outlined additional enhancements coming to Windows 11, including a modernized Run dialog with dark mode support and faster performance, though it will not be enabled by default. The company also plans to reduce notification clutter, simplify settings navigation, and decrease the number of reboots required during device setup. These changes are part of a broader effort to improve system responsiveness and consistency across the Start menu, taskbar, File Explorer, and Settings, based on user feedback.
