How the Detection Works

Apple is developing a new security mechanism for iPhones that will automatically lock the device when it detects a theft in progress. The feature, uncovered in Apple’s source code by researchers, uses a combination of accelerometer data, Apple Watch proximity, and trusted Wi-Fi networks to identify when a phone has been snatched from its owner. If the system determines that the iPhone has been taken to an unfamiliar location, it locks the screen and restricts access to sensitive settings like Apple ID credentials and passwords.

This approach mirrors the Theft Detection Lock already available on Android devices, but Apple’s version adds an extra layer through Apple Watch pairing distance. By measuring how far the phone moves from a paired wearable, the feature can more accurately distinguish between a true theft and normal handling, potentially reducing false alarms.

Impact on Mobile Security

Apple’s current anti-theft protections, including Stolen Device Protection and Find My, only activate after a theft has occurred, leaving a dangerous gap. A thief who grabs an unlocked iPhone can access banking apps, send messages, and harvest saved credentials before the owner remotely erases the device. The new auto lock feature closes this window entirely by locking the device at the moment of seizure, preventing any immediate exploitation.

The development signals a shift toward proactive mobile security that responds in real time to physical threats. Once released, this feature could set a new standard for smartphone theft prevention, especially in regions with high rates of street level phone snatching.
