Government Directive Triggers Model Suspension
Anthropic announced it will immediately disable its most advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all users after receiving a directive from the U.S. government. The order, received at 5:21 p.m. ET, instructed the company to suspend access to these models by foreign nationals both inside and outside the United States, citing national security concerns. Anthropic stated it believes a misunderstanding occurred and is working to restore access as quickly as possible.
The company emphasized that other models remain unaffected by this export control directive. Anthropic’s understanding is that the government believes it identified a method to bypass, or jailbreak, Fable 5. However, the company reviewed a demonstration of this technique and concluded it only identified a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities that other publicly available models can also discover without requiring any bypass.
Security Implications and Industry Context
Anthropic revealed that its Mythos class models are skilled at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities, potentially giving attackers a strategic advantage. The company’s red team noted that a lone operator can now turn a month’s worth of patches into working exploits in a single afternoon for a few thousand dollars with no specialized expertise. This capability effectively transforms N day vulnerabilities into N hour threats.
The company argued that no universal jailbreak methods have been developed against the latest models to date, and third party testing has found their safeguards substantially more effective than any previously deployed model. Anthropic maintains that perfect jailbreak resistance is impossible for any model provider, as every industry safeguard remains susceptible to non universal jailbreaks effective in limited contexts. The company stated the government only provided verbal evidence of a potential narrow jailbreak, which essentially involves asking the model to read a specific codebase and fix software flaws.
