WhatsApp has announced the global rollout of username reservations, a privacy focused feature allowing its over three billion users to connect without sharing phone numbers. Users can choose a unique username, and the app will provide a generator to help find an available handle. This optional feature is designed as a privacy tool, not a social media profile, meaning there is no searchable directory and new contacts must know the exact username to initiate a conversation.

For an additional security layer, users can set up a username key. Anyone attempting to contact a user for the first time via their username must also know this key. Account holders can reset their key at any time to block all new inbound contact from unknown parties. The feature will become generally available later in the year, with users notified when it reaches their country.

Impact on Privacy and User Control

The primary benefit of the username system is the ability to hide phone numbers from other accounts once the feature is enabled. This change addresses a longstanding privacy concern on the platform, where sharing a phone number was previously necessary for contact. Content creators, small businesses, and organizations can also claim their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames on WhatsApp, helping maintain a consistent identity across Meta platforms.

The company emphasizes that usernames are private by design. The update arrives over two years after a similar privacy feature was introduced in the competing messaging app Signal, highlighting an industry trend toward reducing reliance on personal phone numbers for digital communication.
