MetaMask is getting out of a slice of Ethereum staking, and it is blaming an intrusion. The wallet maker said the problem sits somewhere in its infrastructure and that it is pulling the validators it operates from the Lido pool while it investigates.
User wallets face no immediate threat, the company said, though it has declined to spell out what was reached. Lido confirmed the exit, warning that MetaMask will forgo staking rewards and may absorb downtime penalties if machines go dark ahead of the exit queue. The last affected validators should leave by October 7.
Staking stays non-custodial, MetaMask said, and it never holds clients’ withdrawal keys. A follow-up statement found no sign that wallets or customer funds were touched. The company’s advice: ignore unsolicited messages, guard the Secret Recovery Phrase and private keys, and take news only from official MetaMask channels.
