The Installation Failure Problem

Microsoft has released an emergency cumulative update to address a significant installation failure that affected Windows 11 systems after the May 2026 Patch Tuesday. The update, available for versions 25H2 and 24H2, resolves an error that prevented many devices from completing the monthly security update. Affected machines displayed error code 0x800f0922 during the update process, with installations crashing during the reboot phase at approximately 35 to 36 percent completion.

The root cause involved devices with limited free space on the EFI System Partition (ESP), particularly those with 10 MB or less available. While the initial installation phases would proceed normally, the process would fail during the critical reboot stage, leaving systems in an inconsistent and potentially unstable state.

Permanent Resolution and Rollout Details

Prior to this release, Microsoft had provided a temporary workaround through a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for consumer and nonmanaged business devices. Enterprise administrators also had access to an alternative registry based workaround. However, the new cumulative update permanently resolves the issue and eliminates the need for any manual intervention.

The update is delivered in two phases: a gradual rollout for staged device delivery and a normal rollout for broad general availability. It also includes an AI component refresh for image search, content extraction, semantic analysis, and settings models. Personalization improvements were added as part of the gradual rollout phase. A servicing stack update is included to improve the reliability of the Windows update installation infrastructure, ensuring devices can cleanly receive future patches.

The update is available through Windows Update settings with no prerequisites beyond having a compatible Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2 device.
