Uber has appointed Philip Martin as its new Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), bringing in a veteran security leader with extensive experience across high-security technology environments, financial infrastructure, and national defense. Martin joins the ride-hailing company after nearly a decade at Coinbase, where he served as Chief Security Officer and oversaw global cybersecurity, trust and safety, compliance, and physical security operations.
At Coinbase, Martin led a large-scale security organization responsible for protecting both consumer and enterprise crypto services, managing incident response, security engineering, and resilience programs. His earlier career includes building incident response and security engineering teams at Palantir Technologies, as well as contributing to infrastructure development at Amazon’s A9 division, giving him a strong background in both defensive security and large-scale systems engineering.
Before entering the private sector, Martin spent ten years in the U.S. Army as a counterintelligence agent and Arabic linguist, working in both tactical and strategic intelligence roles in the United States and abroad. This combination of military intelligence and enterprise cybersecurity experience positions him to lead Uber’s security strategy across its global transportation and delivery platforms.
In announcing his move, Martin emphasized the unique security challenges at Uber, noting that the company’s platform extends beyond data protection to safeguarding real-world movement—riders, drivers, and couriers operating in real time at massive scale. His appointment reflects Uber’s continued investment in strengthening its security posture across infrastructure, trust systems, and operational resilience.
