Two US Army websites were defaced with pro-Kurdish messaging and insults directed at President Donald Trump, in what appears to be a politically motivated website defacement attack attributed to hacktivist groups.
The compromised sites displayed messages expressing solidarity with Kurdish groups in Syria and criticizing US foreign policy in the region. The defacement also included references to the 404 cyberspace hijacking technique, suggesting the attackers redirected traffic rather than gaining persistent access to the underlying servers. Army Cyber Command confirmed that the affected sites were taken offline immediately upon discovery and that no sensitive military systems were compromised.
Website defacements by hacktivist groups do not typically involve sophisticated intrusion techniques, but they can cause reputational damage and public confusion. The Army is investigating whether the attack exploited a known vulnerability in the content management systems used for the public-facing websites or whether credentials were obtained through phishing. No group has claimed responsibility, although the messaging aligns with patterns seen in previous pro-Kurdish hacktivist operations.
