A class-action lawsuit against xAI over its Grok AI image generator has expanded to include claims that the tool was used to create deepfake child sexual abuse material, adding new plaintiffs and allegations to the already-contentious legal battle.

The original lawsuit, filed by a coalition of advocacy groups and affected individuals, alleged that Grok could generate non-consensual explicit images of real people. The expanded complaint now includes explicit allegations that the tool was used to generate CSAM, citing specific cases where users created and distributed AI-generated exploitative content. The lawsuit claims xAI failed to implement adequate safeguards in Grok before releasing it to the public.

xAI has previously stated that Grok has guardrails to prevent the generation of harmful content and that the company regularly updates its safety filters. However, the lawsuit argues that the safeguards are insufficient and that xAI prioritized rapid deployment over safety testing. The case raises fundamental questions about platform liability for AI-generated content and the adequacy of current content filtering technologies.
